HELLO FRIEND!

Welcome and thanks for being here. I am so pumped to be working with you and am looking forward to your upcoming session! In my honest opinion photos will always be the most meaningful art you own, so I want you to have the best experience possible while we create some raw, real and beautiful ART! This is a time for you to relax and enjoy yourself while I capture you and your family in a natural and authentic way. This guide will help you to prepare for your session and get the most out of our time together. It includes some tips as well as what to expect from me, thanks so much for taking the time to read through!

I can’t wait to get started!

What to expect

My approach

My approach is documentary, candid, honest and emotion focused. I focus on telling your story versus perfect posed images. My work focuses on connection, chasing pretty light and documenting your story. I LOVE to capture the in-between moments. I give direction when needed and will help you if you don’t know what to do with your hands but I also step back and let real moments unfold. Sometimes I will be quiet.. DON'T PANIC, it just means beautiful things are happening and I am making art out of it.

But what if I am awkward!?

So many of my clients tell me they are awkward or uncomfortable in front of the camera (who isn't!).Good news: perfection is the last thing I’m looking for. To be honest, I love a little bit of awkward! It is my job to make you feel comfortable and allow you to be your true and beautiful self. I will help you out by giving you light direction and small cues when needed . Most importantly if there is a trust and comfort between us it will allow your true personality to shine through (and this is where the magic happens!). Try not to worry too much, all I ask is that you are FULLY PRESENT during our session. Remember why you hired me, try to relax and enjoy the session, the rest will fall into place. I promise!

But what if the kids are crazy…

Good news: you are off the hook for our entire session. It’s my job to worry about your littles–I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve. It’s your job to show up full of love and with an open heart. Plus, it actually works better if you let me do the worrying! I want kids to give me their natural selves, and they can’t do that with mom + dad constantly trying to get them to look at the camera and smile. I will always capture at least a few photos of everyone looking and smiling at the camera (I know these are important too!). I always like to get that formal photograph out of the way at the beginning, as long as the little one(s) are into it. From there, I love to let the family (specifically the kids) take the wheel. That might sound scary to parents or someone who doesn’t love to be photographed, but extend a little trust my way and I promise the result will be SO YOU.

A few tips to help prep your kids….

  • Make sure they are rested

  • Make sure they are fed

  • Tell them what we will be doing, and make it sound exciting!

  • Consider a reward/ something fun afterwards

  • Let them be little! Just give them grace to be little, and know I will capture their personalities no matter what

CONNECTION OVER PERFECTION. ALWAYS.

What to wear

One of the questions I am asked most frequently by my clients is “What should we wear?” And it’s no wonder! Your photos are an investment that you have most likely spent some time and money on, and besides being posted on social media and (hopefully) being printed and displayed in your home, they will be passed down for generations to come.

HOW COOL IS THAT!

So it is totally understandable that you want to look your best! I have compiled a few tips below that I am hoping will help you feel less overwhelmed when it comes time to pick out your wardrobe for your next photo session. BUT before you dig in I just want to say these are just my suggestions, most importantly I want you to feel comfortable and like yourself. If that means bold pattern and crazy colour I. am. All. for. It!

  •  Mom or the person who planned/dreamed up the session gets to choose what they wear first, then everyone else coordinates around them.

  • Anything you can sit, stand, lie down, twirl, tickle, and run around in will be amazing for pics. Above all, choose something that makes you feel amazing!

  • Include your kids in the process of choosing their clothes if they’re old enough. If not, they probably look better naked or in a diaper/underwear. Remember to keep it comfortable and choose outfits they can move around in.

  • Use mom’s / the planner’s outfit as a starting point for your colour palette, and dress your family members in each of the colours pulled from your look

  • Light colours, softer tones and neutrals tend to photograph better then dark or ultra-busy patterns.

  • If you can plan ahead, take off smart watches and lose the watch tan line before your session. Screens in pics=not emotive.

  • Be aware of bra lines, tan lines, + anything else that makes your clothes not support you.

  • You are amazing. Your photo shoot should be about you, your family love, and your clothes should support the feelings you want to feel + create during your session.

Newborn Sessions

This section applies to you if you have booked an in-home newborn session with me! If that is not you, you can skip this part!

As you have read, I am a lifestyle newborn photographer. This means that my style is natural and authentic. I don’t use a lot of props or backdrops. I use a documentary approach and sometimes I might just be a “fly on the wall” while you rock your baby to sleep or cuddle up as a family. I also don’t overly pose your baby but we definitely will do some “natural” posing, I usually ask mom or dad to reposition babe.

Your new baby is the star of the show but I love including the whole family in my newborn sessions. Emotions around a new baby are powerful and some of the best images will come from these moments of all of you together taking in the new baby goodness!

I often like to use 3 spots in your home; nursery, master bedroom and living room or wherever has the best natural light! I do not use flash so large windows are our friend! It would be great if you could have these 3 areas available for us to use the day of your session. This doesn’t mean you need to go crazy with the cleaning (let’s keep it real!) I just want you to be aware these are the typical spaces I use.

Let’s talk details

 Light / Timing

It's simply the best scenario if our outdoor session is about an hour after sunrise or an hour before sunset. The reason for this is to avoid harsh midday light, you don't want shadows or uneven light on that beautiful face of yours! We want that gorgeous golden glowy light whenever possible! If it just isn't possible to shoot at these times, fear not! We will find some shade and make it work. If you have booked an in-home session generally anytime between 10am and 3pm will work well!

Location

Outdoor — I love when clients choose locations that are meaningful to them! Think; your favourite beach, that hike you do every weekend, your favourite coffee shop etc. If you do not have a specific location in mind I am happy to suggest my favourite places to shoot here in Muskoka. If I am travelling to you I will ask that you find the location we will use.

In home — are you looking for super authentic, raw, real and love filled images of your family? Well then In-home sessions are for you! In-home sessions will take place in and around your home, in your favourite places and spaces. We’ll start in your home, but your backyard and your porch and the park around the corner you go to every day are not off-limits. If you have at least one good-sized window or a door that leads to the outside we are good to go! I have photographed families in apartments and gigantic spaces–please believe me when I say it does not matter. You matter. The love your family shares matters.

A few more things to consider:

  • Bare feet look best, no shoes or socks please!

  • Open your blinds and curtains - let that light in

  • Please don’t worry about cleaning or preparing your home, I want to document your real!

Weather

I always encourage clients to embrace whatever happens with the weather. I have been a photographer for over 10 years now and have experience shooting in all types of weather and light, I can make it work no matter what mother nature throws at us! That being said, if the weather is extreme, could damage my equipment or makes travel unsafe we will reschedule or postpone at no extra cost to you.

FAQ’s

  • I will have your gallery finished and delivered to you 3-6 weeks after our session
